Intravenous (IV) Therapy
What is Naturopathic IV Therapy?
IV (intravenous) Therapy is the injection of a substance directly into your vein.  It is most often seen in a hospital where various drugs (like antibiotics) are pumped right into the blood stream.  Naturopathic IV Therapy is the injection of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanicals or homeopathics.

What conditions would benefit from Naturopathic IV Therapy ?
Cancer:  It is an excellent adjunct to conventional cancer treatments.  It can help decrease the negative side effects of chemo/radiation without interfering with these treatments.
Weakened Immune System:  It provides a potent boost for your immune system.  Both acute conditions (like the onset of cold/flu) and chronic conditions (like cancer, or fatigue) will benefit from the immune enhancing effects of vitamin injection.
Migraines: IV therapy with Magnesium has been shown to nip an oncoming migraine in the bud.
Digestive Disorders: For people who cannot absorb nutrients well when taken orally, IV therapy is something to consider.  It is not intended for TPN (total parenteral nutrition) but it can be helpful for conditions like Celiac, IBS, or Chronís disease.
Other:  Allergies, Asthma, Depression, and Fibromyalgia have all been shown to benefit from this therapy.  It is also used for detoxification and for improving athletic performance and injury recovery.

Why not just take vitamin supplements?
Assuming your absorption capabilities are normal, oral vitamin supplements are great for everyday health maintenance.  Naturopathic IV Therapy allows for much higher concentrations of vitamins/minerals/etc to be delivered to the body while bypassing the digestive tract.  Itís potent and fast and thatís why itís great for certain conditions like the ones listed above.
How long does an IV treatment take?
The length of treatment varies depending on the amount of solution being injected.  A typical Meyer's cocktail has a volume of 30 mL and takes about 20-25 minutes to inject.
Comparitively, other more specialized formulas can range from 100 - 250 mL in volume, and can take anywhere between 30 min to a couple hours to inject.

How many treatments are needed?
Ultimately, the needs of each individual patient determine the number of IV treatments needed.  For example, for quick immune boosting  purposes, results are usually seen after the first treatment.  Subsequent treatments are then scheduled on a monthly, or as-needed, basis.
In contrast, some cancer patients benefit more from weekly treatments, and these can be scheduled to coincide appropriately with ongoing chemo or radiation therapies.

Is Naturopathic IV Therapy safe?
Absolutely.  Prior to beginning any IV treatment, Dr. Shuster will review your complete medical history - including allergies, sensitivites and potential interactions with your medications - to ensure the highest degree of safety.
