The cancer epidemic:

Statistics show that 20 people will be diagnosed with cancer, every hour of every day this year… and that is just in Canada.   That is a staggering number and a clear example of how cancer has become an epidemic in today’s society.
Conventional treatment typically includes at least one of the following: drug therapy (eg: chemo), radiation, or surgery. Natural remedies are often neglected because they are not a part of modern mainstream medicine; but, natural therapies definitely have something to offer.

A Naturopathic approach to cancer treatment:
In the naturopathic perspective, cancer is more than just a tumour that must be eradicated - cancer is a process that has been going on in the body (often for several years) before the tumour was ever diagnosed.

Therefore, all factors that contribute to achieving optimal health are considered, such as:
       Diet
       Nutrient absorption
       Sleep quality
       Immune system function
       Stress management
       Emotional health
       Etc.

For cancer specifically, naturopathic treatments also aim to decrease the negative side effects of conventional therapies, without interfering.  Side effects like nausea, fatigue, skin wounds, and low white blood cell counts/weakened immune system, are all too common for patients undergoing conventional therapies.  Dr. Shuster, ND uses high quality herbs, acupuncture treatments, homeopathics, or intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy to help control these symptoms safely and naturally.
Finally, studies show that toxins/metabolites of chemotherapy drugs can linger in the body for up to 10 years after the treatment.  Therefore, it is also beneficial for cancer patients to undergo supervised naturopathic detoxification either during or after chemotherapy.  Naturopathic treatments can help eliminate these toxins and restore optimal organ function.

What is Naturopathic IV Therapy?
Naturopathic IV Therapy is the injection of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanicals or homeopathics directly into the blood stream.  While this therapy has benefits for several different health conditions (see Naturopathic IV therapy page), the injection of high dose vitamin C is gaining popularity as a cancer treatment specifically.

Benefits of IV Therapy  for Cancer:

       • Stimulates immune system for optimal functioning against cancer cells
       • Decreases negative side effects from chemotherapy
       • Increases cellular detoxification
       • Increases body's ability to heal
       • Acts directly against cancer cell/tumor growth

High Dose IV Vitamin C for Cancer:

Vitamin C is one of several typical nutrients included in Naturopathic IV therapy.  For cancer specifically, high dose vitamin C is thought to provide anti-tumour effects.  Several clinical trials and research has been conducted regarding high dose vitamin C for Cancer treatment.  Here is a sample of a few articles:

Ascorbate exerts anti-proliferative effects through cell cycle inhibition and sensitizes tumor cells towards cytostatic drugs.
Cancer Chemotherapy And Pharmacology [Cancer Chemother Pharmacol] 2011 May; Vol. 67 (5), pp. 1157-66. Date of Electronic Publication: 2010 Aug 08.
Frömberg A; Gutsch D; Schulze D; Vollbracht C; Weiss G; Czubayko F; Aigner A

"The redox-active form of vitamin C, ascorbate, shows therapeutic efficacy in tumor cells. These antitumor effects of ascorbate are mainly based on its extracellular action and, in addition to the induction of apoptosis, also include an anti-proliferative effect by inducing cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, ascorbate treatment specifically enhances the cytostatic potency of certain chemotherapeutics, which implicates therapeutic benefit during tumor treatment".

Mitochondria, Energy and Cancer: The Relationship with Ascorbic Acid.
Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, 2010, Vol. 25 Issue 1, p29-38; , 10p
González, Michael J.; Rosario-Pérez, Glorivee; Guzmán, Angélica M.; Miranda-Massari, Jorge R.; Duconge, Jorge; Lavergne, Julio; Fernandez, Nadia; Ortiz, Norma; Quintero, Ana; Mikirova, Nina; Riordan, Neil H.; Ricart, Carlos M.

"Ascorbic Acid (AA) has been used in the prevention and treatment of cancer with reported effectiveness. Mitochondria may be one of the principal targets of ascorbate s cellular activity and it may play an important role in the development and progression of cancer. Mitochondria, besides generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP), has a role in apoptosis regulation and in the production of regulatory oxidative species that may be relevant in gene expression. At higher concentrations AA may increase ATP production by increasing mitochondrial electron flux, also may induce apoptotic cell death in tumor cell lines, probably via its pro-oxidant action. In contrast, at lower concentrations AA displays antioxidant properties that may prevent the activation of oxidant-induced apoptosis. These concentration dependent activities of ascorbate may explain in part the seemingly contradictory results that have been reported previously".

Vitamin C in complementary oncology--update 2009
Med Monatsschr Pharm. 2009 Jul;32(7):263-7.
Gröber U.

" The antioxidant perhaps most widely used in complementary oncology is vitamin C, particularly by intravenous injection … High dose intravenous vitamin C therapy may have benefits in patients with advanced cancers, and cancers with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options, but further clinical studies regarding the safety and efficacy of this therapy are necessary …"

Pharmacologic doses of ascorbate act as a prooxidant and decrease growth of aggressive tumor xenografts in mice
Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2008 Aug 12;105(32):11105-9. Epub 2008 Aug 4.

"Ascorbic acid is an essential nutrient commonly regarded as an antioxidant. In this study, we showed that ascorbate at pharmacologic concentrations was a prooxidant, generating hydrogen-peroxide-dependent cytotoxicity toward a variety of cancer cells in vitro without adversely affecting normal cells. … Moreover, a regimen of daily pharmacologic ascorbate treatment significantly decreased growth rates of ovarian (P < 0.005), pancreatic (P < 0.05), and glioblastoma (P < 0.001) tumors established in mice. Similar pharmacologic concentrations were readily achieved in humans given ascorbate intravenously. These data suggest that ascorbate as a prodrug may have benefits in cancers with poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options."

High dose of ascorbic acid induces cell death in mesothelioma cells.
Biochemical And Biophysical Research Communications [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] 2010 Apr 2; Vol. 394 (2), pp. 249-53. Date of Electronic Publication: 2010 Feb 19.

"Malignant mesothelioma is an asbestos-related fatal disease with no effective cure. Recently, high dose of ascorbate in cancer treatment has been reexamined. We studied whether high dose of ascorbic acid induced cell death of four human mesothelioma cell lines. High dose of ascorbic acid induced cell death of all mesothelioma cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. We further clarified the cell killing mechanism that ascorbic acid induced reactive oxygen species and impaired mitochondrial membrane potential. In vivo experiment, intravenous administration of ascorbic acid significantly decreased the growth rate of mesothelioma tumor inoculated in mice. These data suggest that ascorbic acid may have benefits for patients with mesothelioma".
